Day #6 (Sat)

Today we were going to go into Captain Cook (Kealakekua Bay), it's a 2mile hike down the cliff to the beach, and snorkel. The water is very clear here and it's a lovely spot. Unfortunately, because the surf was so high, Deb & Kelly decided it wouldn't be a good idea to go. Especially as I'm a beginner. The decision would have been made for us anyway as the government closed all kinds of beach access today to keep people safe. Of course surf boarders went through anyway. Parked outside the gate and hiked in.

So we had decided today was to be another lazy type day. Fine with me as our first few days were jam packed and I wasn't so sure I was up for a big day.

We had a quiet morning. Deb & Kelly biked around the resort while I wrote postcards. Then we packed a lunch and our swimstuff and went looking for a beach we could access. The waves were CRASHING onto the shore! Higher then they have seen. Very impressive, but scary too. One road (that we had been on a few days ago) in Kona was closed because of water coming onto the road!

We decided to go to a beach that was somewhat sheltered and behind a row of expensive homes. It was a public beach but right behind these homes. You walked on a short wall that enabled you to look right into their back yard - always had a pool in it - or their home - all the doors and windows/walls open to the air. Wow. Wish I could have looked further inside.

We went to a nice area where quite a few locals were enjoying the day. There were quite a few rocks and shallow pools where the waves couldn't really affect you until just about when we were to leave - 3pm-ish - and the pools filled up and overflowed with the surf coming into shore.

Then we stopped at Target and Costco and home for the night.

Sunday morning meeting will be at 10am at Auntie Vi's home in Kona. She is native Hawaiian. Since there are so many extras, vacationers, on the island, two more meetings were created, so we won't be meeting with the normal folks. Only a handful plus many visitors. I will lead the meeting - no vacation from being a worker, unfortunately - and Kelly will pass the emblems.

Beach access between the homes
Walking a ways to the nice beach area
Looking back from where we came
Interesting red bulb on the bushes. Flower or fruit??
Rtight beside me, I was on the wall walkway, was someone's back yard infinity pool with these cute birds splashing in the water
Coral I picked up. But can't take it home. They will confiscate it at the airport.
Several kids playing, some naked native children
Our spot. See pool in front of us? It's only about mid-thigh deep...until the surf comes in, then it was up to about mid-chest
Sunning!
Ominous clouds. If it were Oregon, we'd be rained on, but here... it just threatened and rained nearer the Mauna..
Deb & Kelly decided to cool off one more time
Big group of Hawaiian's, and the houses North of us (my right)
See the surf behind the people? It normally doesn't even break/white cap
If you look at the last 6 pics fast you can see the waves moving down coast. (Pics make it look darker than it was)
Same view as when I was behind our chairs looking out to sea
Notice how the rocks are covered now? It went back out, but this was a protected area, imagine an exposed shoreline!

  1. It's so weird to hear you say that 'Deb & Kelly decided to cool off one more time' because it's cold over here, snow on the mountains and whatnot. :p Enjoy the warmth!
