Day #2 (Tues)

Today the plan was to go to the Macadamian nut store; see the Hawaiian Munk Seal and her pup; drive through Hawi at the NW tip of the Big Island; then Hike down a 1.25mi decline to a pretty beach (and back up); drive back home on a different road going through Weimea where we will go for Wed Bible study; come home, eat, then try out the snorkel in the resort pool.

Hawaiian graffiti - white rocks in black lava spelling out words/greetings
Unshelled Macadamia nuts in parking lot
Testers!
Any takers?? Hawaiians love spam
Crack the nut; one of mine cracked and jumped into garbage can. Oops
See the Xmas decos?
Cute wee church
Cute side-of-highway store
See the roots??
An old Hawaiian cemetary, on way to Monk Seals

Parking lot for hike down
Friendly horse beside our car
Beautiful!!
You see the "King signs" everywhere
Need to go alllll the way down!
Uh. Oh. Look at all the warnings!
Not even halfway...
Gives you some idea of steepness
Some really rocky places
Cliff about halfway down
Down!! Pretty grove
Stacked rocks all over. This one with an offering of a mango?
Debbie
Oh hi ocean!!
So warm!! Very different from Oregon coast water!
That's the hill we came down...and have to go back up!
Black sand
Trying out a rope swing. It was fun. I did have a struggle climbing out - heart rate soared! Lack of water, lack of eating (blood sugar), humidity, heat... But my legs had NO problem climbing. Yay for running and squats!
Hard to see, but this school, like many  houses, has a ventilated foundation. Slats. I think for flash flooding and cooling. Also, all classroom doors were open and windows had slats and were open - for cross breeze.
On our way to Waimea, SW
The Big Island has 10 of the 15 types of climate zones in the world. We went through desert area, rainforest, pasture etc all within one hour!
See the coast line
Looking down on Waimea
Pool at resort where I practiced snorkling. It was fun! So clear view under water. First ocean snorkling tomorrow!!
